TFLN FORUM & TECHNICAL SESSION AT OFC 2024

AFR, a leading company on TFLN technology, together with other aacademic and industry leaders, will hold two joint events on TFLN at OFC, March 2428, 2024, at San Diego Convention Center, California.

Event 1

Technologies and Applications of Thin Film Lithium Niobate Photonics

Time: Mar 25 (Mon) 13:15-16:15

Location: Room 23B + 23C Upper Level, San Diego Convention Center

Event 1 will focus on technology, products,applications, market, and supply chains. This forum will be featured with a speech by Dr. Vladimir Kozlov,CEO of LightCounting, on potential markets, and Prof. Marko Lončar, Harvard University, on his most advanced research development on TFLN. Other experts from HyperLight, Fujitsu Optical Components (FOC), Hisense, Liobate, Ori-Chip, Linktel, and AFR will present their progresses on research, development and applications. The presentation session will be followed

by a panel discussion where executives will talk about how to make TFLN technology ready for applications.

    Vladimir Kozlov is the founder and CEO of LightCounting, which he set up i2004. By now, Light Counting is the leading market research company covering the global communications industry including optical and wireless networks. Dr. Kozlov has more than 30 years of experience in opto electronic technologies and devices, optical communications andmarket research. Dr. Kozlov held market analyst, product development and research staff positions at RHK Inc., Lucent Tech nologies and Princeton University. Dr. Kozlov holds severaI US patents and has numerous publi- cations in the area of optoelectronics. He received M.Sc. at Moscow StateUniversity in Russia and Ph.D in Physics at Brown University in the United States.

    "High Performance Integrated Photonics based on Thin Film Lithium Niobate (TFLN)"

    Professor, Harvard University

    Marko Lončar is Tiantsai Lin Professor of Electrical Engineering at Harvar's John A Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), and chair of Eilectrical Engineering area. Lončar received his Diploma from University of Belgrade (R. Serbia) in 1997, and PhD from Caltech in 2003, both in Electrical Engineering. After completing his postdoctoral studies at Har vard, he joined Harvard faculty in 2006. Lončar is expert in nanophotonics and nanofabrication and his group has done pioneering work in the field of quantum aand nonlinear nanophotonics In particular, Lončar is recognized for his work on the development of diaamond and thin film lithium niobate nanophotonic platforms. Lončar has co-authored more than 250 manuscripts in top scientific journals and has given more than 300 invited talks and seminars. He has received NSF CAREER Award in 2009, Sloan Fellowship in 2010, Marko JarićFoundation Award in 2020, and Microoptics Conference Award in 2023. In recognition of his tteaching activities, Lončar has been awarded Harvard University Levenson Prize for Excellence itn Undergraduate Teaching (2012), and has been named Harvard College Professor in 2017. Lončar is Fellow of Optica and EEE. He is co-founder of HyperLight Corporation (Cambridge, MA), VC baccked startup commer cializing lithium-niobate technology.

    Sy Rhee is COO (Chief Operating Officer) of Fujitsu Optical Componeents America, a subsidiary of Fujitsu Optical Components, Ltd (FOC). He has over 20 yearrs of vast experience in the opti cal components industry covering product development, marketing, and sales roles. Prior to joining FOC in 2005, Sy was a member of technical staff at Fujitsu Comporund Semiconductor and NeoPhotonics. Sy holds Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineeringg from The Ohio State University.

    Hui Hu earned his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from ShandongUniversity in 1996 and 2001, respectively. From 2001 to 2003, he was a post-doc at Tsinghua University, China. From 2004 to 2010, he was in University of Paderborn, Germany, as an Alexander von Humboldt Re search Fellow and a post-doc. Since 2011, he has been the CTO of NanoLNcompany and a pro fessor at Shandong Üniversity. His research is focused on thin film materiinofabrication and integrated photonics.

    "High Speed and Low Power Consumption TFLN Devices"

    Dr. Xinlun Cai did his PhD in Bristol University, U.K. In 2014, he join Sun Yat-sen University in China doing research in photonic integrated devices based on silicon and thin-film lithium nio- bate. He demostrated a hybrid integrated silicon and TFLN modulators with bandwidth of > 70 GHz, the first IQ TFLN modulators and the first dual-polarizationTFLN modulators. The TFLN modulators he demostrated are with bandwidth of > 110 GHz anad half-wave voltage of < 1 V which is the state-of-the-art. In 2020, he Co-Founded Liobate technologies aiming to developing TFLN devices for data-center and Al applications.

  • Dr. Mingzhi Lu

    "Advantages and Challenges of Thin-Film Lithium NiobatePhotonic Integrated Circuits"

    Mingzhi Lu received the B.S. degree from Southeast University in2008, and M.S. and Ph.D. de grees from University of California, Santa Barbara in 2009 and 2013,respectively, in electrical and computer engineering. He also worked as a postdoctoral researcheer from 2013 to 2014 at University of California, Santa Barbara. His research was mainly ffocused on photonic integra tion and optical phase-locked loops. From 2014 to 2018, he worked at Infinera Corp. on large scale photonic integration for 200G, 400G and 800G coherent commuunication. In 2018, he co-founded Ori-Chip Optoelectronics Technology Co. LTD., making widely tunable lasers, thin-film lithium niobate PICs and DFB laser diodes for communicatioon and sensing markets.

    Dr. Jianying Zhou is currently the VP of Technology at Hisense Broadbaand. Previously, he was a Director of R & D and a Principal Engineer with Intel Corporation, a Director of Design and Technology with NeoPhotonics Corporation, and a number of professional positions with Oclaro, Finisar, Nortel, JDS, etc. He has been working in the optoelectronics and fiber-optic communication industries for over 25 years. In recent years, he has conducted advanced pho tonics technology and product development with contributions in a numberof conference pre sentations and journal papers, including a top scored paper inOFC 2019, an invited paper in OFC 2020, a postdeadline paper in 2023 IEEE Silicon Photonics Confeerence, and invited papers in JLT and JSTQE. His interests include silicon photonics, photonic integrand advanced packaged and optical transceivers.

Roberto has accumulated over 30 years of experience in various R & D roles at prominent companies such aPirelli, JDS, Oclaro, and Huawei. Throughout his career, he has specialized in the development of high-speed LN SiP and InP optoelectronic devices.
